ArtistÕs Curriculum Vitae
Brief Biography:
Marko Manriquez
is a native to suburban San Diego, currently residing in rural Boulder,
Colorado. He graduated magna cum laude from UCSD in 2007 where he studied
media, cognitive science and philosophy. He came to UCSD as a transfer student
after working professionally as a pizza delivery driver, ski lift operator,
body piercer, web designer and as a technical director for National Public
Radio.
A media pluralist out of
necessity, MarkoÕs work veers across disciplines and
mediums to explore the intersection of sustainability, interactivity and
activism. Embedded in his aesthetic practice, one may find the use of data
aggregation & data visualization, dumpster diving, Augmented Reality,
Max/MSP/Jitter patches, and old school sewing coexisting happily together. Marko's video parodies are immediately accessible yet
contentious: Freegan Kitchen examined
issues of waste and conspicuous consumption by cooking gourmet meals from
food/ingredients acquired by dumpster diving. His environmental sculpture, the Labyrinth, a massive 2200sq foot maze of translucent
walls situated in a forest - studied and engaged the dynamics of social
architecture and natural phenomena alike using surveillance cameras and
social-analytics software (Max/MSP & Jitter) to constantly record
Time-Lapse Videos of the patterns of social interaction, water & sunlight
alike that emerge within this reconfigurable, constantly evolving architectural
space. Acknowledging that we live in an
era of paradoxes, MarkoÕs work embraces the conceptual fodder of these tropes
jubilantly: leveraging the Òtools of the systemÓ to dismantle, parody and
ultimately rebuild itself, whether these tools are cultural, cinematic or
architectural.
