Mapping the Immaterial Landscape

Last semester, I was interested in revealing hidden topographies whether through sonification of energy consumption or light projection of pollution onto buildings.  I am very inspired to revisit this theme again by representing the invisible terrains we are exposed to every day ( e.g. pollution, poverty, consumption) using simple, often times overlooked techniques such as long-exposure photography and stop animation in novel, inventive ways to that push the boundaries of data visualization and cartography.  The films below are beautiful examples interpreting those ideas.

Immaterials: Light painting WiFi from Timo on Vimeo.

These architectural, sculptural light paintings of invisible WiFi signals begs the question of what other dematerialized data streams can be captured – pollution levels, air quality, mobile phone radiation, emotional temperatures?

Making Future Magic: iPad light painting from Dentsu London on Vimeo.

The iPad light painting suggests real time rendering of 3 dimensional data sculptures  as well as animations as illuminated graffiti (think gif animations in terms of simplicity).  Is there a way to connect the two videos naturally.
